Since 1979, the Jetta has been a mainstay in the Volkswagen lineup. Volkswagen is an automaker that is well-known for solid engineering that produces a great driving experience, and the Jetta has upheld this reputation over the years. If you are interested in taking home a new Jetta soon, you may be wondering if you should purchase a 2018 Jetta or a 2019 Jetta. While both model years are excellent options to consider, you may be thrilled to discover some of the thoughtful updates available in the redesigned Jetta for 2019.


The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is available with several powertrain options. These include a 1.8-liter, inline turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and the 2.0-liter variant of this same engine. These two options are not available for the 2019 model year. The 1.4-liter, TSI turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower is available for both model years. In the 2019 model year, you can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed auto transmission. If you opt for a higher 2019 trim level, your vehicle will also come with Driving Mode Selection and a Cross Differential System.


In addition to the notable updates to the powertrain options between the 2018 and 2019 model years, you will find that the presentation has been revamped throughout the interior and exterior. The 2018 Jetta has a moderately-sized wheelbase that created a spacious cabin. The grille is prominent with larger headlights that are almost rectangular. The 2019 Jetta has a redesigned front end with a hood that slopes more sharply downward into the new grille. The grille fades into LED headlights that have a slender, sporty look. Underneath the headlights, there are large air intake vents to give the 2019 model year a more aggressive look. Side contouring on the 2018 model year is subtler, and the 2019 model year has clearly-defined contouring. Inside the cabin, you will find that the instrumentation panel in the 2018 model has been replaced with a larger digital panel, and the infotainment screen is larger. Also, the 2019 model now has a 10-color ambient lighting feature that can be customized to suit the driver’s preference.


The 2018 Jetta was well-equipped with a full range of interior features, and some of these features carry forward to the 2019 model year. These include cruise control, climate control, power door locks, power mirrors, power adjustable side mirrors, a 12-volt power outlet, remote keyless entry, a folding rear seat and more. Cloth is the standard material for the lower trim levels for both model years, and leather is standard at the higher trim level. Some of the new features that are standard for the 2019 Jetta include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a high-end Beats audio system. The 2019 model now also has a few additional standard safety features for all trim levels. These are a rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, light assist, adaptive cruise control and lane assist. The standard safety features on both trim levels include a safety cage, tire pressure monitoring, airbags, child safety features for the rear row and others.
