Proudly Serving Troy, MI

Both the Volkswagen Jetta and Toyota Corolla are excellent choices for consumers in the market for a compact sedan. Both vehicles are affordable and stylish and offer plenty of options under the hood. But in this comparison, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta appears to be better than ever, thanks to improved styling and performance, more creature comforts and better fuel economy.

Fuel Economy

Drivers who are concerned about fuel efficiency will have plenty to like about the Volkswagen Jetta. The Jetta gets up to 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The Corolla, by comparison, only managed 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. The only model of the Corolla that comes close to matching the Jetta's numbers is the LE Eco model.

Power Under the Hood

The Jetta produces a respectable 147 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque behind its 1.4L turbo four-cylinder engine. The Corolla has less powerful ratings: its 1.8L four-cylinder makes only 132 horsepower and 128 lb.-ft. of torque.

If you do any traveling, you're going to need plenty of space in the trunk for your luggage. And this is an area where the Jetta shines – the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta provides 14.1 cu. ft. of cargo space, one of the most spacious trunks in its class. The Corolla's trunk is smaller at just 13 cu. ft.

The Jetta also has two 12-volt power outlets, a necessary accessory for charging multiple smart devices compared to the Corolla's one outlet, and heated side mirrors are standard equipment on the 2019 Jetta, a convenient perk that's useful on snowy, icy days. The Corolla doesn't offer heated side mirrors on any of its models.
